Rocco Baldelli has officially retired. He said he knew he needed to after the Rays’ first game of the ALDS, when they took Baldelli off the roster and put Willy Aybar back on.
“I pretty much made the decision that day that I wasn’t going to play anymore,” Baldelli said. “I don’t think it was the responsible thing for me or my team to ever go back out there again…And overall, I can look back and smile on the whole situation and be pretty proud of everything that I and my teammates accomplished.”
He has accepted the position of special assistant to baseball operations with the club, a position in which he will be involved in scouting and player development.
The highly popular Rays outfielder, who was once toted to be the next Joe DiMaggio, will tragically be known as the “one that never was”. However, he’ll maintain a special place in the hearts & minds of many Rays fans.

They signed Kotchman to a minor league deal worth up to $750K and an invite to Spring Training.
Kotchman hit .217/.280/.336 in 457 plate appearances for the Mariners last year, adding nine homers and 20 doubles.

The Rays have played on synthetic turf since their inaugural season of 1998. The new “AstroTurf 3D60H” with in-fill systems and latest technology will allow for a better playing surface…finally.
